BHHAS initiatives for environment:

Region of work: Pune city , district and Ahmednagar district.
Introduction:
BHHAS is a group of over 200 medical students of various colleges in Pune. BHHAS was established in February 2005.
The core intention of BHHAS is to make a difference through public programs to benefit the society and environment. BHHAS has undertaken over 50 public programs till date.

  •  Leave the leaves alone:

BHHAS has undertaken programs for creating awareness against the brutal killing of plants like Bel (Bilwa - Aegle Marmelos ), Apta , Kanchnar(Bauhinia Racemosa), Patri, etc. during festivals like ‘Shravani somvar’, ‘Mahashivratri’, ‘Ganesh Utsav’, ‘Dussera’. BHHAS requests people to plant these auspicious indigenous plants instead of cutting them and offering to the gods.
Every year BHHAS organizes awareness programs in temples on these festivals. Ayurvedic doctors and dignitaries from various fields contribute and address to the audience. On every occasion, saplings are distributed.
Various schools, colleges and groups are addressed though lectures, seminars and workshops for saving Indian herbs and indigenous herbal species.
BHHAS has installed boards to educate people about these ancient endangered plant species.
These boards also give information about their Ayurvedic and medical importance and how we can protect them.
These boards are displayed in all the renowned Shiva temples in Pune.

  •  Know your plants:
Pune has a number of well-maintained gardens. BHHAS has identified Indian species among them and displayed informative boards near them. The pilot project was undertaken in Shahid Tathavde Udyan in Karvenagar, Pune in October 2007.

  •  ‘World environment day’ and you:

BHHAS celebrates World environment day through awareness campaigns each year. Over 7000 pamphlets and hundreds of e-mails are circulated every year in the first week of June.
These pamphlets describe how one can contribute to saving and nurturing the environment through little changes in the lifestyle and daily routine.
BHHAS has helped many organizations to establish ‘Nakshatra Vana’s, Herbariums and laboratories. All the programs are carried out from the funds raised by contribution among the members.
